‘The Raven’
This project reimagines Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven through experimental typography to explore ISTD’s brief ‘Books Still: how we read in the 21st century’. Fragmented design reflects the distracted, non-linear nature of digital reading and contrasts it with the poem’s original structure and depth. By placing traditional literature in a contemporary context, the work highlights the shift from immersive engagement to surface-level consumption.
The narrator’s descent into grief and obsession becomes a metaphor for today’s search for meaning in an overwhelming digital world. As he seeks clarity from the raven, modern readers seek purpose amid endless content, algorithms, and emotional noise. The project bridges past and present, drawing attention to how we read in the 21st century, using visual disruption to prompt reflection on how we interpret, consume, and search for meaning in a saturated media landscape.
